Century-old Convent
Another well-preserved structure that is part of the rich heritage of our beautiful town of Hinigaran is the century-old convent, which is now occupied by the Madeliene Academy. While the building itself is seldom used now for regular class instruction, it is remarkably well-preserved and is religiously maintained so students and visitors can have a glimpse of what the school looked like during the early years of Hinigaran.
In 1942, the Pacific War had destroyed several old buildings built during the Spanish colonial period save for some, like the old convent, which was preserved because it had been the temporary evacuation center of the residents who chose to stay in the Poblacion at the height of Japanese mopping-up operation.
Supported by several large tree trunks which have been cut and cleaned so it will become more like presentable poles, the building itself is a witness to the many historic events and occurrences that transpired during the early days of Hinigaran. Aside from the marvelous hardwood floorings and walls, this particular building also houses several antique statues of saints, as well as antique furniture which may have been used by school officials during that time.
The century-old convent, with an area of 33.3 meters wide and 32.20 meters long, is now occupied by the Madeliene Academy of the Parish of Hinigaran, is adjacent to the Roman Catholic Church. It has undergone minor renovation to suit the instructional needs of the school but still retain its old type of architecture.
